The tasks a Furniture Maker, Bamboo is expected to perform include:
Making bamboo furniture by sizing and dressing bamboo pieces, drilling holes, building the frames and body with strengthening pieces
Studying the pattern, size or design of furniture to be made
Collecting seasoned bamboo stakes (rods) and soaking them in water
Removing stakes from the bath when soft
Cutting and removing thin splints and splitting them into strips of desired size and thickness
Cutting the selected bamboo into specific sizes, drilling holes where necessary and setting them into the required pattern
Completing the object by weaving the seat, back and other parts as necessary and fastening the ends either with bamboo or cane strips
Proficiency in handling various instruments related to making bamboo furniture
Competent in identifying defects
Well-versed in the various processes to make furniture with bamboo
Knowledge of the various styles of bamboo furniture
Hand-eye coordination
Manual dexterity
Knowledge of particular articles such as tables, chairs, sofa-sets, etc.
Ability to undertake repair work
Attention to detail
Good aesthetic sense
Precision skills
Diligent and hard-working
It requires one to be on their feet
May need to handle a team of helpers

Working hours
Handicraft and carpet units usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from factory to factory
Shift system maybe available
Being self-employed is also an option. In this case, the working hours and days will be flexible

The story of Indian handicrafts dates back to one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Indian handicrafts represent beauty, dignity, form and style. In the 1970s, the government initiated the preservation of crafts and skill upgrade with respect to the challenges the sector was facing. However the focus shifted to export in the later decades. It plays a significant role in the country?s economy and provides employment to more than 7.3 million people mostly from rural and semi-urban areas. Today, handicrafts and handcrafted gift items manufactured and exported from India are much sought after and have established an unsurpassable reputation in the international market. According to provisional data, the export of Indian handicrafts in the period of April-August 2014-15 has shown an increase of US$ 256.32 million, which is about 18.06 per cent over the same period in 2013-14.
Based on historical trends, the handicrafts sector is expected to grow by 16 per cent from 2013?17 and by another 16 per cent from 2017?22.
