The tasks a Gemstone Polisher is expected to perform include:
Providing the finish to pre-shaped or faceted stones and bringing out the stonescolour and lustre
Dexterity of the hands
Good eyesight
In-depth knowledge of polished gemstone proportions/symmetry
In-depth knowledge of the different cuts and shapes of gemstones
Detailed knowledge of gemstone surface irregularities and polishing defects
In-depth knowledge of the physical characteristics of gemstones
Working understanding of the machinery involved and its repair work
Ability to work with high noise generating machinery
Knowledge about the different types of stones, the family of the stone and their properties particularly with respect to heat and pressure sensitivity
Knowledge about the usage of different qualities of wax an lac for fixing, their merit and demerits
