The tasks a Harmonium Key Maker is expected to perform include:

Making harmonium keys of required sizes by sawing, drilling, filing and smoothening soft wood and gluing celluloid strips on them

Selecting softwood pieces of the required quality; marking, sawing out curves and shaping the wood to make harmonium keys according to specifications

Cutting celluloid strips of the required size and gluing them over wooden keys

Screwing the keys to the keyboard and fixing the keyboard to the wooden cabinet

Drilling holes in the cabinet as per the specification and designs and fitting stoppers to control the wind inside the instrument

Ability to work with a variety of materials including wood, metal, plastic and fibreglass, depending on the instrument

Well-versed in using traditional hand tools for working with wood or metal

Competent in tuning instruments to make sure they produce high-quality sound

Good hand-eye co-ordination

Dexterity of hands

Ability to fit the reed frame to the cabinet

Knowledge of making bellows and fitting them to the instruments

Ability to tune instruments

Attention to detail

Musical instrument crafters usually work for 6 days a week and 8/10 hours everyday. This may vary from unit to unit
