UGC designs degree courses in plumbing and carpentry1
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has proposed a new degree course in vocational studies (B Voc) from the coming academic year. The course is aimed at giving training in jobs like plumbing, carpentry and other vocation skills. The course is mainly targeted at people who discontinued their education after clearing Class 12 examination and want to obtain a degree in a vocation or a trade they practice.
"This course will help those who practice plumbing, carpentry and other skills get a degree. This programme will be conducted in a credit system with flexible modules so that even if they are unable to attend classes continuously they can complete the course," he said.
B Voc is structured like a three-year degree course. Institutions that offer the degree will be allowed to design the course as per the needs of the local environment. Besides the core subject, credits have to be offered on allied disciplines or trades. However, it is unclear whether the course would help an unskilled person gain a degree and, of course, skills in carpentry or any such core subject.
With plans like the Swach Bharat Abhiyaan, and the real estate boom in the Middle-East, there are several job opportunities available for General Plumbers.
