The tasks a Convertor Blower is expected to perform include:
Operating bessemer convertor for obtaining the required carbon content in molten iron for manufacture of steel by blowing
Tilting the convertor by electrical device to receive molten metal from the ladles (coming from mixer furnace)
Blowing air and steam into convertor at required pressure by operating electric switches
Bringing the convertor to vertical position and continuing blowing
Judging the metal condition from flames and sparks shooting out of convertor
Stopping the blowing process when satisfied that molten metal is blown for further processing into steel
Tilting the convertor to pour metal into another ladle for next operation
Competent in operating bessemer convertor
Well-versed with operation procedures & protocol
Proficiency in handling machinery and tools
Competent in watching signals from furnace and power house and take necessary action
Ability to maintain the log book for recording serial number of blow, time, bottom number, vessel number blows on bottom, etc.
Physically fit

Industry Outlook of Iron and Steel Sector
India is the fourth largest producer of crude steel and the largest producer of soft iron in the world. Presently, the Indian steel industry employs around 5,00,000 people while the per capita consumption in 2013 stood at around 57.8 kilograms. However, these figures are expected to rise with increased industrialization throughout the country.
Global and local production trends indicate a positive outlook for the sector in the long run. India is the fourth largest crude Steel producer in the world with an estimated production of 76.7 million tonnes. Steel production figure stood at 14 million tonnes in 1991 and doubled in the 10 next years.
The industry has been growing at a 5 year CAGR of 8.4% and has accounted for 5% of world?s total production. It is expected to reach 275 million tonnes by 2020, making it the second largest producer in the world. Though employment had been decreasing post liberalization, this trend has started changing with an increase in the number of producing units.
